"From the Single Image to the Photographic Project"

by visiting artist/photographer/curator

19-22 May 2015
at THOUSANDFOLD, Taguig, Philippines

After the great success of our workshop with Ricardo Cases and Cristina de Middel in India, we continue the workshop of IED-Madrid and EMAHO Magazine with a Masterclass of Nicolás Combarro in THOUSANDFOLD, Manila, Philippines, 19-22 May 2015.

The recent tendency in the world stage of contemporary photography and photobooks has been undeniably led by the presence and acclaim of contemporary Spanish photographers and artists. With the history of the Philippines to Spain, Thousandfold is eager to bring this new wave by inviting one of Spain's trusted experts, Nicolás Combarro, who is a practicing artist/photographer, curator (Reina Sofia Musem, Maison Eurepeene de la Photographie Paris) and educator (IED-Madrid) to share and exchange knowledge, works, and dialogue with our local art and photography community.

The workshop, "From the Single Image to the Photographic Project," introduces fotografia de autor through an intensive 4-day workshop aimed at identifying and developing the student's artistic language within the medium of photography. As each artistic voice is unique, each student will be given one-to-one instruction in their process to create a cohesive project. The mentor will acquaint the participant in context to art history, current photographic tendencies, and output possibilities, such as a photobook or an exhibition, coupled with a practical knowledge on the production workflow. At the end of the workshop, the students will present a public slideshow of their work in progress, which will be seeds to further develop long-term practice.

Attendees who complete the Masterclass will receive an official CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE from the art school Istituto di Design in Madrid, Spain .

On 21 May, Nicolás Combarro will be present to open his SOLO EXHIBIT of photographs and sculptures at PABLO gallery in Bonifacio Global City. He will also give a public talk, presentation, and book signing of "Arquitectura y Resistencia."

You do not need to be a photographer to feel the urge to tell your story in the photographic medium. We welcome everybody who wants to learn how to use photography the way it works best: as a medium that can codify and de-codify reality; a medium that tells stories, that allows to put some order in the chaos, or chaos in the order; a democratic medium in the best and worse sense; and an artistic medium, if it needs to be. The workshop is, thus, addressed to both students and professionals in the field of photography and the visual arts:

Photographers, New Media or Image-Based Artists, Designers and Curators, as well as students of Fine Arts, Audio-Visual Communications, Publicity, Journalism, Art History, Architecture and/or Humanities

With this workshop, THOUSANDFOLD adheres to its aims to develop, encourage, and promote 'fotografia de autor' in the Philippines, a way of presenting stories from a personal/author artistic perspective, away from old formulas, in order to open up new ways of seeing and telling within the local visual culture.

The workshop, however, is not intended for technical schooling about camera operations nor provide guided street shooting.
